If there is one thing I learned, prayers are powerful pleas that help us manage pain and bewilderment, hopelessness and despair, because with God’s help, anything is possible … even making it to third place at a time when the first priority was family. Prayers and hope, these have become part and parcel in tackling my battles. Life is short, and when we least expect it, problems threaten to derail us, and suddenly, our very existence seems fraught with insurmountable situations. Best of all, to laugh at the oddest discussions with my gal pals have been quite therapeutic for me and has helped with my sanity. I for one, learned that when I feel overwhelmed and in despair, a quick phone call to a good friend to vent, to catch up, sometimes to ask for advice or an opinion is quite helpful. With the help of family and friends, and sometimes the kindness of strangers, through God’s Grace and prayers, we learn to deal with our situations. We can choose to fold up, or gather our strength, roll up our sleeves, and do what must be done to tackle the challenges thrown in our paths. The truth is revealed eventually but in the meantime, we make do with the hand that is dealt us.

Life is indeed full of surprises, good and bad, but only God knows why that is. I felt like Florence Nightingale on call, but it is what mothers do for their family. I only prayed for two things when the plane made its ascent every time –that the Lord will grant me good health to be able to keep on traveling, and for a safe flight to my destination. I was flying back and forth every 2 months to California to help with a medical family situation, that I had to maximize every waking moment whenever I touched terra firma. I received a plaque and rounds of “Congratulations “ and it dawned on me that I was too busy with life’s extreme challenges last year that awards and accolades did not factor into my work because my focus was on family. To all of those in the community and UVA that worked miracles every day, we thank you. When it was announced at our breakfast meeting this month that I was one of the top 3 brokers at our office, Realty Executives Advance in Schaumburg, I thought it was a joke. It’s my hope as we round the corner from this pandemic and into a new year that it is those memories of resilience and togetherness that we choose to hold on to. Getting to know these people, who are often unseen and unrecognized, and being able to help showcase their hard work is the best part of my job and keeps me going. But I also saw perseverance, incredible sacrifice, resilience and ingenuity I’ve met many amazing people working tirelessly to heal the community, move the University forward and try to give our students the best experience that can be had considering the circumstances. Throughout this year I’ve spent documenting the UVA community I’ve seen heartbreak, unspeakable loss and sadness everywhere. I would learn, though, that the hopeful feeling I had for the year ahead was still true, if misplaced at the time. Nobody could have predicted how the rest of the year would unfold, and I don’t think it would be a stretch to say this year was awful for everyone.

Although the Cavaliers lost, it was a great showing and an amazing gathering of the UVA community in south Florida and I think everyone left feeling hopeful for the year ahead. I was returning from photographing the University of Virginia football team playing in the Orange Bowl against the University of Florida. The calendar flipped from 2019 to 2020 as I was sitting in a middle seat of an American Airlines flight somewhere over North Carolina.
